Job Summary

The Residence Hall Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of assigned residence hall(s) and supporting broader Facilities Management operations as needed.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities

  1. Custodial Duties – 90%
    • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance tasks for assigned residence hall(s), including:
      • Cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, including toilets, vanity areas, and shower rooms.
      • Sweeping, mopping, and maintaining floors and stairwells.
      • Vacuuming carpets and rugs in common areas.
      • Collecting and properly disposing of trash and recyclables; replacing liners in receptacles.
      • Cleaning and maintaining entryways, windows, airlocks, and door frames.
      • Performing seasonal deep cleaning as needed.
      • Addressing minor maintenance concerns or reporting larger issues to maintenance staff.
      • Adapting to additional custodial or operational needs as required.
  2. Residence Hall Staff Collaboration - 10%
    • Establish and maintain professional relationships with residence hall staff, including Resident Directors (RDs) and Resident Assistants (RAs), to foster a positive and well-maintained living environment for students.
    • Work proactively with Residence Life staff to identify custodial needs and address concerns to enhance the residential experience.

Required Skills

  • Basic knowledge of cleaning procedures, supplies, and safety protocols related to hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to operate custodial equipment, including vacuums, carpet cleaners, and floor scrubbing machines.
  • Capability to lift and move moderately heavy items as part of cleaning and maintenance tasks.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work and manage time efficiently.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong customer service orientation and commitment to creating a supportive and collaborative work environment.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with Facilities Management staff, Resident Directors, and Resident Assistants.

Experience

No prior experience required.

Education

High School diploma or equivalent.

Additional Information

Travel: This position requires no travel.

 

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as desktop and/or laptop computers, photocopiers and smartphones.

Expected Hours of Work:

  Typically, days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, with the expectation to work specific schedules and hours as identified and communicated by management. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. This is a 32 hour per week, 9.5 months per year position.
