Job Summary

Leads year-round campus grounds maintenance and projects.

Responsibilities

  • Executes specialized turf and grass maintenance programs for all non-athletic turf areas. – 20%
  • Participates in snow and ice removal and control. - 15%
  • Performs routine lawn mowing, trimming and edging for all non-athletic turf. - 15%
  • Performs regular grounds maintenance and projects. - 15%
  • Maintains and repairs all irrigation systems for non-athletic turf areas. – 10%
  • Executes all projects pertaining to campus groundcovers, flowers, shrubs and trees. – 10%
  • Assists with the maintenance and repair of all campus hardscapes – 5%
  • Assist with maintenance on grounds equipment and spaces. – 10%

Required Skills

  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects.
  • Working knowledge of the equipment, products, and techniques used in preparing soils for, propagating, cultivating, pruning, maintaining, irrigating, and controlling pests for groundcovers, turf grasses, flowers, shrubs, and trees.
  • Working knowledge of common pesticides and chemicals.
  • Working knowledge of the equipment, products, and techniques used in the management of high-input sand-based sports turf, and the ability to identify and create solutions for common sports turf problems, diseases, and pests.
  • Working knowledge of the equipment, products, and techniques used in landscape and hardscape installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Basic knowledge of general grounds management issues in the Upper Midwest including: storm water management, invasive species management (in particular buckthorn and other noxious weeds), the management of natural areas, and wetland/watershed management.
  • Working knowledge of the equipment, products, and techniques used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of pavements including asphalt roads, paths, and parking lots; concrete curbs, sidewalks, and stairs; and permeable paver systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of the equipment, products, and techniques commonly used in snow and ice control operations in the upper Midwest.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to operate medium to heavy duty grounds maintenance vehicles and equipment.
  • Working knowledge and ability to operate of small grounds maintenance tools and powered equipment.
  • Must have a valid Minnesota driver’s license.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to interact effectively with a wide variety of individuals.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work independently and as a member of a team.

Experience

Required Experience:

  • 2+ years of related experience.
  • Minnesota non-commercial pesticide applicator’s license is required.

Education

Required Education:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Additional Information

Travel: This position requires little to no travel.


Work Environment:

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as desktop and/or laptop computers, photocopiers and smartphones.
  • Must be able to evaluate the exterior and interior cleanliness of buildings and inspect all types of custodial related or supported areas.
  • Complies with environmental health and safety requirements and procedures as outlined in University and State policies and directives.
  • This position may be required to enter active construction sites and may need to access areas of the university that vary in temperature.
  • This position may require exposure to chemicals and pesticides.

Physical Demands:

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • The job requires extended periods of sitting and traversing the Bethel Campus on a regular basis. Must be able to lift items weighing 75+ pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to ensure people are able to perform the essential functions.

Expected Hours of Work:

  • Typically, days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, with the expectation to work specific schedules and hours as identified and communicated by management. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. This is a 40 hour per week, 12 months per year position.
