Job Summary

Carry out the day-to-day patrolling of campus, supporting campus partners in creating a safe environment, responding to both emergency and non-emergency calls, and protecting University community members and guests.

Responsibilities

  • Pro-actively patrol University campuses, both on foot and in a vehicle.
  • Enforce University policies as necessary. 
  • Respond and appropriately deal with both emergency and non-emergency calls or incidents. This may include but is not limited to community assistance (escorts, vehicle assists, lockouts), medical emergencies, fire alarms, and motor vehicle accidents.
  • Conduct periodic safety/fire inspections as assigned, issue parking violation tickets, conduct traffic direction, and work towards ensuring the overall safety of the Bethel University Community.
  • Write detailed and accurate electronic reports as required.
  • Conducts security interviews on persons displaying suspicious behavior.
  • Requests the assistance of law enforcement, fire department, EMS and others as necessary.
  • Respond according to policy and appropriately deal with suspicious behavior, unattended items, and vehicles.
  • Utilize quick decision-making skills and sound judgment acting in accordance with Bethel University policy and procedures along with State statutes.
  • Ensure proper radio traffic, keeping dispatchers and supervisors informed of all pertinent incidents and activities. 
  • Provide quality service to campus guests and community members at all times.
  • Set up and tear down signs, cones, barricades, etc. for events on campus. 

Required Skills

  • Independent thinking with strong observation skills and ability to multitask.
  • Prior experience of working as part of a team.
  • Flexibility in working hours.
  • Required to work weekends and some holidays.
  • Maintain an adequate level of physical fitness to perform duties of position effectively (i.e. timely and effective response to emergency situations.)
  • Ability to successfully complete a rigorous 40-hour behavior detection class (SIRA®).
  • Ability to successfully complete use of force and defensive tactics training. 
  • Ability to complete basic first aid/CPR training.

Experience

Required: two years of public safety or related experience. 

 

Preferred: two year of experience working in safety or security in higher education. 

Education

Required: high school diploma or equivalent. 

 

Preferred: a law enforcement or related associates degree.

Additional Information

  • Maintain a valid driver's license and adhere to Bethel University Driver Authorization Conditions:
  • Any driver with the following violations in the past 3 years will not be allowed to operate a Bethel vehicle
    • 3 or more moving violations
    • 2 or more at-fault accidents
    • Careless driving
    • Passing a stopped school bus
    • Texting while driving
  • Any driver with the following violations in the past 5 years will not be allowed to operate a Bethel vehicle
    • Reckless driving
    • Speed in excess of 25 MPH over the posted limit
    • Driving while intoxicated or under the influence
    • Open container (alcohol)
    • Drag racing
    • Leaving the scene of an accident
    • License suspension
    • Vehicular homicide
    • Criminal-type conviction
  • Requires working in a guard station and patrolling in a vehicle or on foot.
  • Must be able to work in a sitting position at a computer or in a vehicle for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to work outside in extreme and varied weather.
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects weighing 50+ pounds. 
  • Shift work is required in addition to serving periodically on call and may require working nights and weekends. The shifts we are hiring for are: 
    • Monday - Friday: 1600-0000 (4:00 pm - 12:00 am)
